Foreclosures Up

The Lowell Sun ran a front page, above-the-fold article in yesterday’s paper about the surge in local real estate foreclosures. Much of the information that the article was based upon came from the records here at the registry. When we talk about “foreclosures” in this context, we mean Orders of Notice from the Land Court that have been recorded at the registry. While not all Orders of Notice lead to an actual foreclosure sale of the property (that would be evinced by a Foreclosure Deed that would be recorded about a month after the foreclosure auction occurred), an Order of Notice certainly indicates a distressed situation with the property. Now that it’s June 1st, we can give you the total numbers of Orders of Notice recorded for the month of May. The first number indicates the number recorded in May 2005, the second number is May 2006:
Total: 20/78
Billerica: 3/11
Carlisle: 1/0
Chelmsford: 3/5
Dracut: 3/10
Dunstable: 0/2
Lowell: 8/33
Tewksbury:1/4
Tyngsborough: 1/1
Westford: 0/5
Wilmington: 0/7
