Death & Taxes

by @ 9:38 am. Filed under Statistics, Real Estate

How does the saying go…”the only things in life you can be sure of are death and taxes”? After reading the Boston Globe yesterday it seems truer words were never spoken. According to an article in the Globe’s business section the average tax bill in Massachusetts will increase 5.3% in 2007. The jump brings the average tax bill to $4,003. In some communities homeowners will see a double digit increase. Residents of Weston have the dubious distinction of paying the highest average tax bill in Massachusetts… $13,739. This is a 6.8% increase from last year. If this seems a little high, you can always move to Florida. No, not the sunny, warm one…I mean Florida, MA. It has the lowest average bill…$1,014. The Globe examined tax bills for 298 Bay State communities and found 281 will be increasing in 2007…That’s 95% of the communities in Massachusetts. The 6.7% average state-wide increase in 2002 represents the largest hike in recent years. The article points out that many of the highest increases are in fast growing communities whose school systems are being put under heavy financial pressure. This link lists all the cities & towns in Massachusetts with their average assessment and tax bills. It makes for interesting reading.
