The latest on real estate recordings and new technology from the Middlesex North Registry of Deeds in Lowell
Today’s trivia question…What do Romek Figa and the Beatles have in common?… Give up? Both the Beatles and Figa have sued Apple Computer. But, unlike the Beatles who have reached a settlement with Apple, Figa wants to stop the future sale of iPhones. What? I love my iPhone! Figa claims the iPhone uses a caller ID technology he developed almost twenty years ago. Apple doesn’t agree. In 1990 Figa patented a caller ID system for cell phones. The system linked incoming calls with a stored list of contacts. When we think of it today it seems like no big deal…but 18 years ago this must have been a ground-breaker. This is the very same system being used by most cell phone manufacturers including Nokia, Samsung, Motorola and Sony Ericsson. So why isn’t Figa suing them? That’s simple…these companies have agreed to license Figa’s patent… but not Apple. It won’t pay up. Apple doesn’t think it has infrigned on Figa’s patent. Besides taking the iPhone off the market, Figa wants Apple to pay a large “unspecified amount” in damages…If Romek Figa wins this one, the Beatles won’t be the only ones singing “Baby I’m A Rich Man”.
