Doubtful

The Middlesex North Registry has 16 books referred to simply as “doubtful”. They are part of what we call the Middlesex South books. We have explained the Middlesex South books in earlier posts so I won’t belabor the explanantion. The Middlesex South books contain records of documents effecting the towns in the north district prior to the opening of the Middlesex North Registry of Deeds (July 2, 1855). These books were hand copied in 1855 (and later) by registry workers. The writing is art. The books are categorized by town and have a common Grantor and Grantee Index. This brings me back to the “doubtful books”. The “doubtful books” are kind of a “catch all” for documents that don’t quite fit into the usually mold. When we had electronic images created from the Middlesex South microfilm the “doubtful books”…I must admit, fell through the cracks. Since we have all the necessary equipment and personnel in place for mass scanning, we decided to scan these books in-house. I am hoping the whole project will not take more than a week.
