Method of Payment

The registry accepts cash or checks (including personal checks).  Checks should be payable to "Commonwealth of Massachusetts."  We do not accept credit or debit cards. 

Copies of Documents

Digital images of all documents are freely available on our website.  When at the registry, certified copies and copies printed from our computers are $1 per page.  Coin operated copiers ($0.50 per page) are also available to the public.  To obtain copies by mail, please send a self-addressed, stamped envelope and a check for $5 per document ($15 for mortgages).  For certified copies of Registered Land documents, please call that department directly at 978/ 322-9030.

Document Stamp Rates

The State Excise Stamp Tax (MGL c.64D, s.1) shall apply to deeds, instruments or writings whereby any lands, tenements or other realty sold shall be granted, assigned, transferred or otherwise conveyed to, or vested in, the purchaser . . . when the consideration of the interest or property conveyed, exclusive of the value of any lien or encumbrance remaining thereon at the time of sale.  The effective tax rate is $2.28 for each $500 or fraction thereof of taxable value.  To view current and historic excise stamp charts, follow the links below:

Recording by Mail

To record by mail, send the original document, a check payable to "Commonwealth of Massachusetts" for the correct recording fee and a self-addressed, stamped envelope to Middlesex North Registry of Deeds, 360 Gorham Street, Lowell, MA 01852.  If your document is Registered Land, please place a Postit Note on the face of the document with the words "Registered Land" written on it.  Documents received by mail are typically recorded and scanned the same day.  Documents that cannot be recorded are returned to the sender by mail, usually the same day.

"Multiple Documents"

A document that is otherwise recordable on its own (or a photocopy of such a document) shall not be recorded as an attachment to another document but must be recorded separately.  This rule does not apply to Affidavits filed in accordance with MGL chapter 183, section 5B
